A cooperative of around 450 members in the Gayo mountain region of North Sumatra, Indonesia produces this special coffee. Each producer member farms a family plot ranging from 1-5 hectares. The community was part of a relocation program designed to bring rural prosperity to the area; they have collaborated to reach a global market with the coffees they produce. The coffee is processed using the “wet hulling” method popularized in the 1970s as a means to shorten the length of time until payment for the coffee while making due without expensive drying infrastructure (later used once coffees are aggregated at exporter operations).
